Common methods for DNA testing
The two most common methods of DNA testing are: mitochondrial DNA testing (mtDNA) and Y chromosome DNA testing (Y DNA).
Mitochondrial DNA testing
Mitochondrial DNA is a type of DNA found in the mitochondria of your cells. Mitochondria act like a digestive system that takes in nutrients from inside the cell, breaks them down, and creates energy for the cell. They are essentially the energy-producing “powerhouses” in human cells. Mitochondrial DNA testing examines... (read more).
Y chromosome DNA testing
Y chromosome DNA (Y DNA) is inherited along the paternal line, from father to son only (females have no ‘Y’ chromosome). This kind of DNA testing can be used to determine the relatedness of males only.
Y DNA testing ‘decodes’ a list of markers in a sample of DNA... (read more)
